7 WAYS TO MAKE YOUR NEW YEAR’s RESOLUTION ACTUALLY STICK

Did you make any resolutions this year? If yes, it’s time start putting the plan into action.  Did you know that 4 out of 5 people break their resolutions, and a third don’t make it until the end of January?  Here is how to make your goals stick:

1. KEEP IT SIMPLE

Start small and pick just one or two goals. Break them down into small goals and work towards one thing at a time. Unhealthy behaviors develop over the course of time. Thus, replacing unhealthy behaviors with healthy ones requires time. Remember that it’s not about overnight lifestyle makeover, but about gradual and sustainable lifestyle changes.

2. WRITE IT DOWN

Statistics show that people who write down their goals have over an 80% higher success rate of achieving them.

3. MAKE YOUR GOALS SMART

      Specific
         Measurable
       Achievable
     Realistic
          Time-bound

4. GET SUPPORT

Think of joining gym class, support group at work, online group challenge; get a friend, family, health coach, doctor or coworker on board.

      5. MAKE YOURSELF ACCOUNTABLE

Getting accountability is key for success. Tell as many people as possible about your goal so they can keep you accountable. Set reminders and put your goals on the calendar as a doctor’s appointment. Get your friend or coworker on board, create a health challenge at work, or ask your personal trainer for help!

6. TRACK YOUR PROGRESS

Tracking your eating habits and/or exercise using an app or journal can actually help you get where you want to be faster. It will also help you stay realistic and motivated!  Be patient – a habit takes at least three month to develop.

7. CELEBRATE YOUR SUCCESS!

Remember, it’s about progress, not perfection. We all slip once in a while. Just learn from every mistake and start all over the next day. Don’t be too harsh on yourself and celebrate every step of the way!  If you feel overwhelmed or unable to meet your goals on your own, consider seeking professional help to discuss strategies as to how to adjust your goals so that they are more attainable. The bottom line – You deserve to be Healthy and Happy!
